What does this tool do?

Counts the words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines of any text, and adds three things a plain count does not tell you: how long it takes to read, how long it takes to say out loud, and which words you are repeating the most.

Reading and speaking time

The times use the usual published averages: 200 words per minute reading silently and 130 words per minute speaking. They are averages, not promises — a text full of long technical words takes longer, and one full of short ones takes less. Treat them as an order of magnitude, which is what you need when a script has to fit in two minutes.

The words that dominate

The keyword list leaves out the grammatical filler (articles, prepositions, pronouns) and counts what is left, with its density as a percentage. A word at 8 % in a 300-word text is telling you something about the text; the same word at 0.4 % in a 5,000-word one is not.

Keep in mind

Everything is counted in your browser: the text never leaves your machine, which is why you can paste a draft, a contract or a client’s email into it without thinking twice.
