# Social Character Counter

> Count characters and see what is left against the limit of each social network, post type and meta tag.

## What does this tool do?

Writes once, checks everywhere. Paste a post, a bio, a title tag or an SMS and the tool shows, for
each platform, how many characters you have used and how many are left — or how many you are over.

## Characters are counted the way a reader counts them

Three figures are shown because they genuinely differ:

- **Graphemes** — what a reader sees. A flag emoji is one, a family emoji is one.
- **Code points** — Unicode characters. A flag is two.
- **UTF-16 units** — JavaScript’s `string.length`. That same flag is four.

Most editors and most platforms count closer to the first figure; a few database columns and an old
SMS gateway count the last. Having all three on screen is what stops a text that looks short from
being rejected on paste.

## Keep in mind

The limits are each platform’s own published numbers, collected in October 2026, and they change
without notice: treat the numbers as a guide and the platform as the authority. Nothing is sent
anywhere — the counts are computed in your browser.
