## What does this tool do?

Works out the age between two dates: years, months and days exactly, plus the totals in months,
weeks, days, hours and minutes, the weekday of the birth date, and when the next birthday is.

## Why “years, months and days” is not a subtraction

An age in months and days depends on how long the months in between were, and they are not all the
same length. Going from 15 January to 1 March is one month and fourteen days if you borrow from
February. The tool does that borrowing properly, which is the only reason the result matches what a
registry office or an insurance form expects.

## The next birthday

The countdown points to the next time that date comes round: this year if it has not happened yet,
next year if it has. Someone born on 29 February will see 1 March in the years that are not leap
years, which is the convention most legal systems use. And if today is the birthday, the countdown
reads zero rather than a year.

Dates are handled in UTC, so the result does not shift by a day depending on the time zone you are
in. Nothing is sent anywhere: the whole calculation happens in your browser.
